A man has been arrested after a woman was found with critical injuries in Newcastle-under-Lyme on Monday (1 May).
Police were first called to Newcastle Road, Madeley, at 9.46pm on Monday following reports of a man acting suspiciously.
A short time later, a woman in her 50s was found with serious facial injuries inside a home nearby. She was rushed to hospital by paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service and remains in a critical condition.
Her injuries are believed to be life-threatening and specially-trained officers are continuing to support her family at this time.
A 20-year-old man, from Newcastle-under-Lyme, has since been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody.
Detective Inspector Adrian Webb, from our Major Investigations Department, said: "We are working hard to understand more about what happened on Monday night and the circumstances which led to this woman's injuries.
"Early inquiries are continuing into this isolated incident and I'd ask anyone who has any information, and those who haven't spoken to us yet, to do so as soon as possible.
"A number of scenes have been set up at different locations whilst we investigate all of the information we have at this time, including reports that the suspect went into properties on Newcastle Road.
"We have gone to these locations to make sure no further injuries have been reported and to offer our reassurances to the local community who are understandably concerned by these events.
"I'd like to thank everyone for their patience around the cordon and for those who have already come forward with information."
