Detective Inspector Adrian Webb, from our Major Investigations Department, said: "We are working hard to understand more about what happened on Monday night and the circumstances which led to this woman's injuries.

"Early inquiries are continuing into this isolated incident and I'd ask anyone who has any information, and those who haven't spoken to us yet, to do so as soon as possible.

"A number of scenes have been set up at different locations whilst we investigate all of the information we have at this time, including reports that the suspect went into properties on Newcastle Road.

"We have gone to these locations to make sure no further injuries have been reported and to offer our reassurances to the local community who are understandably concerned by these events.

"I'd like to thank everyone for their patience around the cordon and for those who have already come forward with information."
