Man arrested on suspicion of arson following fire in Burslem town centre

A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire broke out in a derelict building in Stoke-on-Trent last night (3 July).

Emergency services were called to St Johns Square, Burslem, shortly after 10pm.

A man was trapped on the top floor of the building but thanks to the quick thinking of a member of the public, the man was brought to safety after a ladder was used to reach him.

The man was taken to hospital but was not seriously injured.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway (Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service).

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "A full investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.

"A 43-year-old man, of no fixed address, has been arrested on suspicion of arson.

 "Anyone with any information that can help with our investigation is asked to get in touch by calling 101, quoting incident 790 of 3 July, or by messaging us using Live Chat on our website."
