A petition which called what has happened at Tunstall Memorial Park a 'desecration' and called for action by June has finally been heard at Stoke City Council.

The petition, which was organised by Joy Garner, was signed by 166 people.

Previously Ms Garner said that she had reported issues she and other residents had to the council several times and said that the park is in dire need of help. In her petition she listed 11 points which need to be addressed, with seven needing to be done by June in time for Remembrance Sunday.

Speaking at the meeting Joy said: "I refer to what's happening as a desecration due to its tragic state." She then went through the points she had raised in the petition and told the committee that some action had been taken on some of the points she had raised.

The issue of security was raised by Councillor Ross Irving (Con) while calling for more investment into the memorial park. He said: "We do need some form of security, camera security, patrol security to ensure the miscreants in the park who are causing damage aren't allowed to get away with it.

"We've got to put some investment into it but it's no use putting the investment in and leaving it to rack and ruin again. We've got to get some form of security , but ideally security patrols going around there regularly to see what's going on in the park because it's quite isolated, there is a main road going through it but you get very few pedestrian movements, so once people are in the park they are left to their own devices."

While Councillor Glen Watson (Lab) said he "wholeheartedly supports the sentiment" of the petition. With Councillor Amjid Wazir (Lab) saying if we invest we need to look after the investment.

Officers are due to update the committee on the progress of the work being undertaken at the park in the coming weeks. However it understood that local veteran voluntary groups are helping assist in the clear up operation.
