The pothole, on Cornelious Street, has been nicknamed 'Meir's new pool' (LDR).
The pothole, on Cornelious Street, has been nicknamed 'Meir's new pool' (LDR).

A local business has started a protest against a pothole outside their shop, including gnomes, ducks and frogs.

Angelstone Gems in Meir have labelled the pothole 'Meir's new pool' after the large pothole appeared outside their shop over a month ago.

The pothole which is a recurring sight on Cornelious Street and residents report that it has been reported to Stoke-on-Trent City Council numerous times since it has grown in size.

Susan Cope, manager and owner of Angelstone Gems based on Cornelious Street said that she can hear the bang of cars driving through the pothole in her shop and she was thinking of decorating the pothole with something new each day.

She said: "Sometimes you'll be sitting in the back and you'll just hear the bang as a car drives over it.

"The way people are parking means that sometimes you are forced to go through it. I don't think the council knows how bad it is.

"I know it was last reported two weeks ago, but people started reporting it a month ago. It's like the council doesn't get at it properly so it keeps coming back.

Susan Cope, owner of Angelstone Gems based on Cornelious Street, said she was thinking of decorating the pothole differently every day (LDR).

Susan says that part of the problem is that people are using the street to park on and is being used as a rat run.

She continued: "People shouldn't be parking here, there is a carpark around the corner with 30 minutes free. The road is being used as a rat run, especially when the kids come out of school. It's mad, absolutely mad.

Despite the street being resident parking only, locals report that the street is constantly being used by people shopping at the nearby shop. Due to the location of the pothole if cars are parked on either side of the road drivers are forced to drive in the pothole.

Residents living on the street are also fed-up with the crater sized hole at the bottom of their street.

Paul Barnes, 38 said: "It happens all the time, people are continuously driving up this street. The potholes at the top of the street have been filled in at least four times this year but within a week they are back open again.

"It's like a crater and that's the second time it has been like that. It will never make a difference unless they rip up the road and resurface the whole road."

Stoke-on-Trent City Council have been approached for a statement.
