A huge residential development could be built on the site of a former hospital in Stoke-on-Trent, if plans are approved by the city council.
University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust has submitted a planning application for the former site of North Staffs Royal Infirmary, on Princes Road in Hartshill.
The hospital was constructed in 1866 and demolished around ten years ago, although the HQ building remains on site.
The proposals for the site include up to 200 "high quality" new homes, of which 25% would be affordable housing.
There would also be an area of public space with a children's play area in the northern part of the site.
A Planning Statement, submitted as part of the application, says: "The site will be served by three proposed main vehicular and pedestrian access points: two off Princes Road; and one off Queens Road.
"The development will be arranged in a series of blocks of 2-3 storeys, ranging from 2, 3 and 4 bedroom homes.
"Around 30% of the site will be open space, and the existing access points into the site are to be reused. The majority of houses will be 2-2.5 storeys high, and will be terraced, semi-detached depending on local conditions.
"The apartments around the HQ building are to be 2.5-3 storeys, but will be subordinate to the locally listed building. The likely palette of materials includes red brick and render with tiled roofs. Where possible, materials will be locally sourced."
The 9.73 hectares site currently has space for around 900 vehicles and the applicant says "car parking would be carefully integrated into the development" although specific figures have not been confirmed.
A decision is expected regarding these plans is expected in the coming months; the full planning application can be viewed here.
