A Grade II listed, 19th century church in Stoke-on-Trent is to finally get a new roof after it was damaged by a fire last year.

St John's Church, on Newcastle Road in Trent Vale, was damaged by a fire which broke out in the early hours of 20 April 2022.

The cause of the fire is not certain, however it is suspected that it was due to a defective charging cable for a tablet computer.

The content of the east side and its stained-glass windows were destroyed in the blaze, as well as much of the roof structure above.

The proposed restoration of the roof is for the most part a like-for-like replacement.

Permission was granted for the Grade II listed church to get a new roof on Friday 11 August (Nub News).

But to comply with the building regulations, Church of England guidance, and the views of Historic England, a new roof profile has been designed that will increase the thermal performance of the roof, reducing the energy consumption, carbon emissions, and cost of heating the building.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council granted permission for the works to go ahead on Friday 11 August.

The officers report states: "Preliminary ecological appraisal (PEA) has identified that several birds nests were present on the site.

"It is recommended that the proposed works take place outside the bird nesting season of March to August however if this is not possible, then prior to work commencing, a check for nesting birds should be carried out."
