A 'for sale' sign has appeared on land north of Forrister Street in Meir Hay (LDRS).

'For Sale' – the sign which residents have not wanted to see after losing their battle to stop nine houses being built on a much loved, well used piece of greenspace.

The land, known locally as Teletubby Hills is used by both children and dog walkers could soon come to an end as stalled plans to build on the land have been reignited by the appearance of the for sale sign.

The for sale sign was first noticed over the weekend and has since been the topic of much discussion on the local community Facebook page.

Local resident and dog walker Susan Bateman said she was not impressed and says she uses the site everyday and it is well used by the community.

She said: "I'm not impressed with it, this is the only greenspace around here. Everyone uses it from all around the estate. Loads of people objected to the plans last time, there are places around here which have got planning permission and they are just left, why should we lose this green space."

The land, known locally as Teletubby Hills, is used by children and dog walkers (Google).

In total 143 letters of objection were sent to the council and the application was refused over the loss of open space the development would cause; however this decision was overturned on appeal.

The land is currently being advertised for sale by Bagshaws Residential with offers over £475,000 being accepted.

Bagshaws note that the current planning permission allows for nine houses to be built on the site however, there could be the opportunity to increase this number to 14 houses.

Resident Betty Barwise said: "I think it will spoil it, people walk their dogs up there and kids play there. I think they would spoil it to be honest. I'm a bit disappointed by it but I've only been here 10 months and that is one of the reasons we bought it because we thought it was quite nice."

Local local ward councillor for Meir Hay North, Parkhall and Weston Coyney, Craig Beardmore (Con) told residents that it is a great shame and accused the developers of wanting to 'cash in' by allowing the council to maintain the area.

Taking to Facebook Councillor Beardmore told concerned residents: "It's a great shame that this is happening to our community.

"We fought this tooth and nail when the planning application was submitted to the council. We got community support and a huge amount of objections to the application. I spoke against the plans at the planning meeting held at the council and the application was rejected by the committee.

"Unfortunately, the current land owner then took this to appeal and an outside, independent planning officer (not from the council – or the local area more importantly) was appointed and they approved the application and overturned the decision that we'd all fought so hard for.

"It's a huge shame for our community that the land owners have allowed the council to maintain it and for people to walk over it for 30+ years but now just want to cash in on it.

"A few years back I paid from my community budget to have the path improved that connects this to the top end of the green space and I can honestly say it was money well spent because I always see people using it.

"As someone who has lived on the estate for 17 years, I'm really saddened to see this happen."
