Demolition work on a fire-damaged Stoke-on-Trent is due to go ahead this week after previous attempts were postponed in July this year.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council has announced that demolition work on the building on Market Street, Longton will be carried out from Thursday (24 September) by a "specialist contractor".

While the work takes place, a section of Market Street near Times Square will be closed from 7pm on Thursday 24 September until 3pm on Sunday 27 September.

The city council added that buses heading to Bentilee and Meir, that usually call in Market Street, will call at the bus station for the duration of the works.

A spokesperson for Stoke-on-Trent City Council said: "A previous attempt to demolish the building had to be postponed after the contractor was unable to proceed. They have now confirmed that the work will take place next week. Businesses affected by the work are also being contacted directly by the contractor.

"The former commercial premises suffered two fires late last year. Since then, our building inspectors have continued to monitor the site and have raised concerns about the safety and stability of the remaining structure.

"We will provide further updates as the work progresses."
