The demolition of a fire-hit building on Newcastle Street, Middleport, has finally begun this week.

Emergency services were called to the busy road on 7 April after a three-storey building caught fire and a section of the road has been closed ever since.

Full demolition of the building began yesterday (22 July) and Councillor Jane Ashworth, leader of the city council, said "we are one step closer to getting the road reopened.

"We would ask you to please bear with us while this essential work is carried out and we thank you for your continued patience."

A fire tore through the three-storey building back in April (Nub News).

"The law around demolishing privately-owned properties is complex. It has taken far too long to sort this out.

"To make sure the council has done everything it can, in the quickest time span, a review of our policies is underway to investigate ways of speeding up the process."
