Delivery drivers could be barred from playing their radio while visiting a takeaway to reduce the noise impact on neighbours.

This is one of the conditions being proposed for Caprinos Pizza, in Cross Heath, which is bidding to stay open as late as 4am.

Councillors were due to make a decision on the Liverpool Road takeaway's application to vary its licence in June.

But the licensing sub-committee at Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council adjourned the hearing and asked for a noise impact assessment to be carried out and for officers to propose a set of conditions.

Caprinos wants to change its licence to allow it to stay open until 4am on Fridays and Saturdays and until 3am the rest of the week. Environmental protection officers had raised concerns over the impact on neighbours, with the nearest house being just 36 metres away.

One of the conditions now being proposed would require Caprinos to only use its own delivery drivers – as opposed to a third party such as Deliveroo – who would have to undergo training every six months.

This training would include instructions to only use the A34 for arrival and departure and not use Wilton Street after midnight.

Drivers would also be told not to use their horn while their vehicle is stationary, 'in greeting or frustration', or between the hours of 11pm and 7am. And drivers would not be allowed to use their vehicle's radio or sound system while visiting the premises, particularly when they have their windows open, or leave their engines idling outside the takeaway.

A noise impact assessment carried out in relation to the kitchen extraction system at Caprinos found it likely there would be 'low impact'. The assessment concluded that 'with good site management there should be no reason why the site should not be permitted to extend opening hours'.

Members of the licensing sub-committee will meet again to determine the application on Monday, August 11.
