Calls have been made for Stoke-on-Trent City Council to look at flooding in the city as heavy rain caused flash flooding on numerous streets across the city.

Now, Cllr Andy Platt is calling on the council to look at whether a previous investigation into flooding was actually implemented.

Recent flash flooding saw London Road in West End completely flooded along with Stoke town centre submerged in water and cars being left on the A34 in Trent Vale.

In 2020, a petition was submitted to the council signed by 189 residents over flooding issues in London Road.

The council launched an investigation into the issues after two major flooding incidents saw water entering homes and businesses.

The investigation was set to conclude in March 2021 following flood and drainage assessment looking at the reasons for the flooding and potential solutions.

Following the most recent incidents Cllr Platt wants to know whether any action was taken. He said: "If you remember, a fortnight ago extreme flooding was a serious issue around this city.

"I've never seen it like that before. In 2020 we had a petition to the full council that went to scrutiny and there were various recommendations and I'd like to know what happened."

Mr Platt described how water was ankle high while walking across the street and that the situation was worse at West End compared to 2020 when water was several feet deep.

Following the petition in 2020 a consultation was due to take place and work with Severn Trent to identify blockages was set to happen. However he now wants to know whether it actually took place.

He continued: "I'd like those specific things answered but also how did scrutiny work and was it effective because it didn't appear to be effective a fortnight ago, when cars couldn't get through it was that deep.

"Residents went away from that meeting in 2020 believing that there were things in place. I want to know were they, what has been done because it hasn't solved the issue. So where did it go wrong."

Laura Carter told the committee she received 63 phone calls in the span of just three minutes from residents over issues relating to flooding and heavy rain.

She told the housing, regeneration and operations overview and scrutiny committee: "I do think it's not only for the council to look at how we are going to deal with this going forward but do we need to bring Severn Trent in for broken and collapsed drains.

"I do know within Sneyd Green when other works have been done it has shown a lot of evidence of broken and collapsed drains that are Severn Trents which have probably contributed to this."

Deputy Leader, Cllr Amjid Wazir said it took him 90 minutes to get from the council officers to his Shelton home and was working with council officers and the Leader of the Council, Jane Ashworth to liaise with crews attending to incidents

He said: "Our team was very active that night, they did what they could. They were at the scene straight away and worked hard."

It is hoped the committee will set up a future meeting in which Severn Trent will be invited, to investigate the issues further. A council officer is set to review the specific issues raised by Cllr Platt.
