Families are calling for action after rubbish has been fly-tipped right across an alley and has caused rats and other pests to plague residents.

It is so bad that residents say that people are moving away just to get away from it.

The dump located across the alleyway between Elm Street and Moore Street in Cobridge has been like that for weeks, say residents, despite it being reported numerous times.

The waste which spans both entrances and further into the alley contains beds, mattresses, broken glass and a shopping trolley full of rubbish.

This comes as the City Council announces further spending to tackle the issue. Over £500,000 is going to be spent tackling the issue, as cases reach a record high.

Elm Street resident Adam Khan says the council needs to 'step it up' and be proactive or otherwise people are going to keep doing it.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council have pledged to tackle the issue across Stoke-on-Trent (LDRS).

The 24 year old said: "I think everyone has an idea of where it's coming from but nobody is doing anything, we're at the mercy of the council.

"It's been like that for weeks and it's had countless reports but it's not helped, it's terrible. Over the years it has been reported numerous times saying there needs to be a deterrent.

"It does make you want to move and slowly people are getting out but that shouldn't be the reason for it."

On the other side of the alley on Moore Street Abdul Jilil, who has lived there for eight years says the problem is attracting rats and other pests.

Mr Jilil, 38 said: "The rubbish problem has been here for a long time in this area. At midnight people come here by car and put the rubbish around. Every night when I came home from work I would notice people with their boots open.

"The council should take action and maybe put a camera up, anything would help.

"Because of the rubbish rats and mice have started to come, it's very bad. When we open the back window the smell comes in.

Residents say the rubbish is attracting pests and the smell is entering their homes (LDRS).

Cllr Amjid Wazir, cabinet member for environment and enforcement, said: "We have received the fly-tipping reports for this area and it has been added to the clean-up list. We are currently facing a 30-day response time for waste removal.

"We remind all residents who think it is ok to tarnish their neighbourhoods, that not only is it disrespectful to the area, and your fellow neighbours, it is also bad for the environment.

"We are coming after anyone who thinks this is acceptable and a £400 fixed penalty notice will be issued.

"To report environmental issues please make contact via the MyStoke app or by visiting www.stoke.gov.uk or telephoning 01782 234234."
