City Centre Library, Bethesda Street, Hanley, has been closed this week following a fire on Saturday afternoon (Sarah Garner).

City Centre Library, Hanley, has remained closed today to allow "essential health and safety work" to take place following an accidental fire at the weekend.

Firefighters were called to the library on Bethesda Street at 4.50pm on Saturday (18 March) following reports of a fire.

The fire was accidental and caused by an overloaded battery circuit.

The fire was contained within a small area on the second floor and no-one was injured (Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service).

The library was consequently closed on Monday "to allow for further health and safety checks to be completed", according to Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

It has also been closed today, but library staff are hopeful that the venue will reopen tomorrow (23 March).

Library users are being asked to use other libraries in the city or the online service
