Campaigner calls out council following highway improvements on busy Stoke-on-Trent road
A campaigner has called out Stoke-on-Trent City Council following highway improvements on a busy road. Deborah Monroe, who started a petition last year says this is not what the community asked for.
Back in July last year Deborah started a petition attracting over 116 signatures for traffic calming measures on the busy Hartshill road. One of the big problems on the road are motorists who speed through the pelican crossing near The Noah's Public House.
After the petition closed, Councillor Amjid Wazir, cabinet member for environment and enforcement met with Ms Monroe to understand the concerns from the community. Speaking last year he said: "We listened to concerns raised by residents and talked through initial proposals to improve roadside signage and the introduction of road markings.
"These will raise driver awareness of the location for the pedestrian crossing near to The Noah's Public House and the need for drivers to slow down and drive through the area with extra caution."
However it was over a year later in August this year when pedestrian safety measures were introduced. Seemingly the change has been to install a sign on the corner of Nelson Road and Hartshill Road.
Deborah said: "This is not what we asked for as a community. There were over 100 signatures from people around here who agreed with me. Between 2017 and 2021 there were 17 collisions on this road, that's not including 2021 to now.
"Every week without question there is a crash on this road. This is a straight road and there is no deterrent."
She is calling on the council to install a red light camera to catch motorists who break the law. She says the installation of a red light camera will act as a deterrent to motorists and increase road safety.
She continued: "I've got a four year old and before we cross the road, we push the button, we wait for it to go green and we have to wait still because I'm that anxious about a car going through because it happens that often.
"The sign is in a random place, it's on a blind corner, it makes no sense where they've positioned it, it's not even one you'd see in the dark properly."
Stoke-on-Trent City Council have been approached for comment.
