Ambulance workers across Stoke set to resume strike action for one day
Ambulance workers from across the West Midlands are set to return to strike action tomorrow (Monday 12 June).
In May, a pay deal was reached between the unions and the government which the government hoped would end the strikes.
However Unite, one of the unions that took part in the negotiations, voted to reject the deal. Speaking at the time Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said "it was very unlikely this offer would be accepted."
The latest strike for ambulance workers across the West Midlands is set to take place on Monday but only between the hours of 0600 until 1200 and then at 1800 until 0000.
West Midlands Ambulance Service had said it respects the right for workers to strike and demonstrate their support of strike action.
The industrial action means fewer ambulances on the roads and fewer staff taking your 999 calls; however, ambulances will still respond to urgent calls such as heart attacks, strokes and cardiac arrests as normal.
As a result the service recommends using 999 wisely and use the symptom checker at NHS 111 Online (www.111.nhs.uk) if you're unsure of which service to use.
Additionally, the Service is clear – if you need immediate medical care, and are unable to make your own way to hospital, call them and they will find you the right care.
Emergency Services Operations Delivery Director, Nathan Hudson, said: "We have had productive discussions with our staffside colleagues to agree that ambulances will respond to the most urgent calls such as cardiac arrests and where a crew request immediate back up at the scene of a case or other very serious cases such as heart attacks, strokes, difficulty in breathing and maternity cases.
"In addition, staff in our non-emergency patient transport service will continue to convey vulnerable groups such as patients undertaking renal dialysis, cancer treatments, palliative care, emergency scans within the strike period timeframe.
"Ambulances will be dispatched where clinically appropriate."
