A development of 44 affordable houses and apartments could be built on a vacant brownfield site, if a planning application is approved.

Westchurch Homes and The Bampton Property Group Ltd have submitted an application for a 100 percent affordable housing development at a vacant industrial site on Furlong Road, Tunstall.

The proposed scheme would be delivered in collaboration with a Registered Provider of Social Housing (RP).

If the application is approved, a mix of houses and apartments would be built including 10 four-bedroom houses, 15 three-bedroom houses, 13 two-bedroom houses and six one-bedrooms apartments.

The application stated: "The proposed housing mix has been carefully considered to ensure the creation of a sustainable and well-balanced neighbourhood, offering a blend of smaller starter homes and larger family homes.

"The proposed housing mix, typology, sizes, layouts, and style are appropriate for the local need and will integrate comfortably within the local context."

There are currently no buildings on the site following the demolition of the former factory (image via Nub News)

The site, formerly home to the Greenfield Pottery factory, was later used for warehouse purposes but has been vacant for several years.

A series of residential planning permissions have been granted from 1998 onwards, but the land has yet to be developed.

The application also proposes new landscaping on the brownfield site to "soften the view from the main access road".

An objection to the development has been submitted by National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) due to the position of underground electric cables.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council have yet to make a decision on the application. To view the full application visit the Stoke-on-Trent City Council planning website here.
