A50 diversion causes chaos in Blythe Bridge as "houses shake" and residents struggle to sleep

Residents living in Blythe Bridge are fed-up of the chaos the A50 roadworks are causing. People living on Uttoxeter Road, the main diversion route, say the heavy traffic is keeping them up at night and their house has started to shake.
Now residents are faced with 10 weeks of heavy traffic and gridlock right outside their houses due to ongoing gas work by Cadent on the A50 which has closed much of the road with motorists forced to travel through Blythe Bridge.
Pensioner Susan Colclough remembers the traffic situation before the A50 was built and how residents campaigned and petitioned for the road to be built due to how bad the traffic was.
She said: "At night you can't sleep because of how bad the traffic is, you've got lorries coming down at the time. It's horrible because it does disturb your sleep at night but it's gas works and it has to be done but I would question whether they have thought about it enough."
The road was only reopened a few months ago due to resurfacing works which lasted four months.
One of the main issues is the level crossing which halts traffic which closes two times per hour for two minutes and causes massive tailback along Uttoxeter Road.
Residents have questioned the timing of the road works and why could it not have been delayed until the school holidays. Resident Bob McCracken said: "Clearly there has been no forethought.
"Coming up are the school holidays so there would be no school traffic and that would have eased things. If you go out to the A50 and see how many people are working there, they've done a good job at blocking it off, but nobody is there."
Mark Simpson said: "It is a nightmare all the time down here at the moment. There are some cars which are driving on the pavement to try and get ahead. It takes hours to get home from work and you can't see anyone working.
"I know they need to carry out the work but when all the lorries are driving past I'm sure my house shakes. You would have thought there would have been a better way to do things."
A Cadent spokesperson said: "Cadent is investing over half a million pounds to replace the existing ageing iron gas pipeline under the A50, to a more durable plastic pipe that will supply energy to over 10,000 homes and businesses. The new pipe will future-proof the network and can carry greener gases like hydrogen. It will also mean that you will see a lot less of us in the future, as it will reduce the need for repairs"
"We know that the works are causing traffic problems and we appreciate the patience of local motorists, however they are vital to ensure a safe and reliable gas supply to the area for years to come. We are trying to complete the project as quickly and as safely as possible and currently have three teams working late into the evening. We have worked closely with National Highways to design the diversion route, and would urge anyone with enquiries to contact us or visit www.cadentgas.com/a50blythebridge for regular updates"
