An 80-year-old man has been jailed for nine years and seven months after he murdered his wife in Stoke-on-Trent.

Peter Matthews, of Weston Coyney, called 999 on 22 March to tell police what he said.

Police and paramedics attended the scene on Denton Grove and sadly, Carol Matthews, 73, was found dead inside.

Peter was taken to hospital. Once he was discharged, he was taken to custody and charged with murder.

Police and paramedics were called to Denton Grove on 22 March (Nub News).

He told officers that he used a pillow to suffocate Carol.

He pleaded guilty in court to the offence at Stafford Crown Court in July and was sentenced at a hearing in the same court on Friday 9 August.

Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Inspector Lisa Holland, from the Major Investigations Department, said: "This was such a tragic case for the family who are continuing to come to terms with what happened earlier in the year.

"Even though our work on the investigation has finished, my thoughts and the thoughts of the team involved are still very much with Carol's family.

"I hope the end of this process has provided them some form of closure."
