Retirement homeowners share how every day connections impact our wellbeing

Whether it's sharing a coffee or stopping for a chat, a retirement community operator - with a Newcastle-under-Lyme location – shares how every day connections can impact our wellbeing.
Homeowners with Adlington Retirement Living, which operates Brookfields House in Newcastle-under-Lyme, have shared how small interactions can have a big impact on their mood.
A spokesperson for the retirement community operator said: "Sometimes it's the smallest conversations that make the biggest difference.
"A friendly hello. Catching up over coffee. Seeing familiar faces. Stopping for a chat on the way to lunch.
"It's something many of us recognise, even if we don't always think about it."
Homeowners shared how living in a retirement community means there are plenty of opportunities for these positive interactions.

One homeowner, Lesley said: "Even if you're just putting the rubbish out, you'll exchange a few words with somebody.
"The staff are always really pleasant and chatty. It sounds funny, but just a few words with somebody can really lift your mood."
Research from Age UK highlights how changes such as retirement, bereavement, heath and moving house, can gradually reduce everyday social contact.
The research also found that many older men don't describe themselves as lonely. Instead, they talk about missing the chats they used to have at work, feeling less useful after retirement or seeing fewer people day to day.
Living in a large family home after the loss of his wife Janet, homeowner Frank, found that downsizing wasn't the answer for him.
"What I needed was a community," he said.
Frank says he settled in straight away, making new friends and taking part in the book club.

David's experience followed a different path but led him to a similar conclusion.
After losing his wife, Jean, he remained in the family home for more than a decade before deciding it was time to move.
He said: "I remember saying once to a lady at church, not all that long after Jean had died, 'You know, I never spoke to a person yesterday'."
Now, as an Adlington homeowner, he says, that's hard to imagine.
"The camaraderie is one of the best things about living here, without a doubt, because I see far more people than I ever did," he said.
"There's a real community spirit and we're just having more fun."

When homeowner Tony chose to move, it was important he had access to community, but also the opportunity to spend time independently.
He said: "I needed somewhere with community. Somewhere where I could be alone if I wanted to be or go and have a coffee with people if I fancied it."
Today, Tony says he enjoys lunches with friends, theatre trips, cinema outings and knowing there's always someone nearby when he feels like company.
"Here I have friends on tap if I want them, privacy when I don't," he added.
That balance between independence and companionship is something many homeowners value.
Homeowner Rob agreed that the balance between independence and companionship is something many homeowners value.
He said: "Being part of the community is a huge plus. The activities really help foster that sense of connection.
"You can get as involved as you want without feeling pressured. That was important to me."

A spokesperson for Adlington Retirement Living added: "Across all of these stories, one theme stands out.
"More than anything else, people talk about the everyday conversations, familiar faces and reassurance of knowing they're part of a community.
"Life is full of change, but one thing doesn't change: we all need people around us."
