A local building society, with a branch in Hanley, has confirmed that they are staying open and staying local.

Leek Building Society, which has 12 branches open across Staffordshire, Cheshire, Derbyshire and Shropshire, continues to stay committed to serving the people of Hanley, following a recent bank closure announcement in the town.

Hanley Economic Building Society announced that its Hanley branch will close on 7 March 2026 and advised customers to use alternative nearby branches such as Festival Park and Newcastle.

Leek Building Society's Hanley branch has been located on Stafford Street since 1962, providing personal, face-to-face financial support for savings and mortgage members.

Hanley branch manager, Kieran, said: "We know how important it is for people to have real conversations about their finances, especially during uncertain times.

"Our team is proud to offer that friendly, expert support right here in Hanley, where we've been for generations."

Leek Building Society, which was named the UK's Best Specialist Mortgage Provider at the British Bank Awards 2025, is committed to offering the convenience of online and mobile services alongside a traditional in-branch experience.

As part of this commitment, the building society also offers savings appointments, which are friendly face-to-face chats where a member of the team will talk through a customer's goals and plans and help them choose the right option for them."

Hanley branch manager, Kieran, said: "Our savings appointments are a quick, friendly chat to help you understand your options and choose what's right for you.

"No pressure. No jargon. And it doesn't take long — but it can make a real difference."

He added: "We take pride in being a force for good.

"Our tailored services and unwavering dedication to supporting our communities are what sets us apart. We're also one of the only building societies that offers passbook savings accounts to the communities we serve.

"If you're a saver looking to get more out of your money, a borrower wanting to explore your mortgage options, or a person or organisation eager to grow with us, we'll help you achieve your goals."
