Marvellous is the funny, moving and surprisingly true story of Neil Baldwin, who refused to accept the label of learning difficulties and who has carved out a colourful life, as a circus clown, Stoke City Football Club kit man, active church member and unofficial university welfare officer.
That there is a feature-length BAFTA winning biopic, starring Toby Jones as Neil, is itself just one of many extraordinary events in the life story of a man who counts many famous people as 'a very good friend of mine'. Amongst the extraordinary events, the film presents portraits of the important relationships in his life – with his mother, his lifelong friend and biographer Malcolm Clarke, Lou Macari, the Stoke City Manager who describes Neil as 'my best signing ever', the Church of England and Keele University.
The Film Theatre is presenting Marvellous in celebration of Neil's 80th birthday, and Neil and Malcolm will introduce the film. A Q+A will follow the screening.
