Firefighters responded to reports of waste on fire inside a bin lorry in Stoke-on-Trent this morning.

Crews were called just before 11am today (Monday 9 March) to Burtree Drive in Norton, following reports of a vehicle fire.

Nobody was reported injured and the waste was emptied onto the road before being extinguished using a hose reel jet.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue service has now issued a reminder that lithium-ion batteries should never be disposed of with household waste.

Crew Manager Nicola Hall-Malone, who attended the scene, said: "This fire was caused accidentally, by a lithium-ion battery.

"Lithium-ion batteries are a significant fire risk when damaged and should never be disposed of alongside household waste. Instead, they should be taken to a designated recycling point."
