They say never work with children and animals but veterinary practice owner, Carl May, couldn't imagine doing anything else nor could his team.

But it's not just dogs which Carl adores – it's any pets which need our care from cats and rabbits to birds.

Carl's career in the veterinary world began as a child when he did work experience in a Newcastle-under-Lyme practice.

"I've always loved animals and loved the work experience. The vet took me under his wing and my career started then," he said.

Carl, who lives in Brown Edge, has a long and varied veterinary career which has seen him working in practices in Stoke-on-Trent as well as New Zealand.

Carl has worked in veterinary practices all over the world, including in New Zealand (Vets4Pets).

Qualifying as a veterinary nurse back in 1996, Carl says animals can have such a calming effect.

It is this passion which led Carl to take ownership of a popular Alsager veterinary practice, Vets4Pets.

Carl said: ""It's getting bigger every week and we have a long list of committed customers on our books.

"We work hard to have a good relationship with our customers. We're given a position of trust and will do our very best to deliver.

"We can't fix everything but we will certainly try and as well as our staff we have visiting specialists coming into the practice."

Carl has two dogs of his own, Bodhi, a Vizsla, a Hungarian pointer-type breed and Fleur, a short-haired rescue dog.

"Animals give without taking anything and dogs especially know when something isn't right," he says.

"They can be a wonderful addition to a family. My own dogs have given me so much and I know how much it hurts when a pet dies.

"We offer aftercare following a pet loss. Pet counselling can be offered to help with bereavement which is a difficult time for owners."

Carl's practice currently employs three vets, two receptionists, two veterinary nurses, a trainee veterinary nurse and is recruiting for a part-time vet.
