Two people have been rescued from an accidental flat fire in Stoke-on-Trent.

Emergency services were called shortly before midnight on Monday 20 January to an address in Hanley following reports of smoke in the area.

A total of three fire crews attended the scene and used two breathing apparatus and a hose-reel jet to put out the fire.

An extension ladder was used to rapidly remove two people, a man and a woman, from the property.

They were assessed by paramedics at the scene and received oxygen treatment before being taken to hospital by ambulance for precautionary checks.

Emergency services were called to Hanley just before midnight on 20 January (Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service).

Officers from Staffordshire Police also attended to assist in inquiries. Crews left the scene shortly after 1am.

The fire was later deemed accidental.

Station Manager, Ben Woodward, said: "Crews worked quickly to minimise the damage at the scene and make sure those in the area were safe from harm.

"We are reminding the public to be aware of the risks of using candles and oil lamps in the home.

"They should always be placed in a holder, never be left unattended and should be kept on a flat, non-flammable surface, away from windows.

"Home owners must also ensure that anything with a naked flame must fully extinguished before leaving a room and is kept away from any flammable materials."
