Trapped pony rescued from tractor tyre in Stoke-on-Trent

A pony has been rescued after it was found trapped inside a tractor tyre in Stoke-on-Trent.
The RSPCA was called to the incident after concerns were raised about a pony who had become completely stuck inside a large tractor tyre lying on its side in a field.
The pony was found with matted and dirty fur, and although he was breathing, he was distressed.
Local residents stepped in to help lift the heavy tyre while RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer (ARO) Nicola Riley worked carefully to free the pony in stages.
Nicola said: "It was a very delicate rescue, the poor pony was completely wedged against the tyre and understandably very scared and uncomfortable."
"We had to take a staggered approach to free him safely - first easing out his front feet, then carefully working his shoulder free before finally releasing his neck and front end.
"Thankfully, everyone worked really well together and we managed to get him out without causing any injury."
After being freed, the pony was initially a little wobbly and stood for a short while partly inside the tyre before managing to walk himself free completely.
The tyre was then moved to ensure it no longer posed a danger to animals in the field.
Nicola, who remained with the pony for an hour afterwards to monitor his condition, added: "He soon returned to grazing and walking around the field again.
"But this could have ended very differently, so I'm really grateful to the local residents who stopped to help."
