The work of community groups and volunteers in Stoke-on-Trent will be in the spotlight at a special Celebrating our Community Sunday afternoon service at Stoke Minster at 4pm on Sunday 16^th August.

The informal service of readings and music is planned as a thank-you for all the devoted work of local charities, community groups and volunteers, and will be followed by the opportunity to socialise over tea and home-made cake.

"The volunteers who keep Stoke Minster going are worth their weight in gold and deserve a thank-you," said Revd Alison Thomas, priest at Stoke Minster. "And that goes for all the other groups of volunteers, involved in everything from children's activities to the arts and crafts, that bring the local community together and do so much good in the city.

"As a church at the heart of Stoke we come across so many unsung heroes who help to create a bit of a 'buzz' about the city and enrich our community life. Stoke Minster often hosts concerts and exhibitions, as well as large-scale events like last year's Centenary Tea Party and the Longest Yarn exhibitions, and we see how much hard work goes on behind the scenes to make them a success.

"This service is a chance to celebrate our community and all the ties of faith and friendship that bring us together."

Admission to Celebrating our Community is free, and everyone is welcome, whether or not they are usually churchgoers. Donations will be welcome in aid of the Friends of Stoke Minster charity, which helps to fund essential repairs and maintenance at the historic building.
