A large fire has broken out in Stoke-on-Trent this evening with black smoke seen billowing across the centre of the city.

A stretch of the A53 is currently closed between the Cobridge lights and the junction for Sneyd Street while Staffordshire Fire and Rescue deal with the huge blaze at a scrapyard.

Eyewitnesses saw black smoke rising just before 8pm on Thursday. (Supplied)

Six fire engines are in attendance and people are being advised to avoid the area and to close all windows and doors 'as a precaution'.

It's thought the fire started before 8pm this evening (24 July).

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue said: "We currently have 6 fire appliances at a scrapyard fire in Cobridge, Stoke-on-Trent.

"Please avoid the area, and if you are local to the area, close all windows and doors as a precaution."

Stoke Nub News has approached Staffordshire Fire and Rescue and Staffordshire Police for an update.

We will update this page.
