Stoke-on-Trent has been highly ranked in a report of the best and worst places to live in England and Wales this year.

Property finder company Garrington has published its 2024 marketing report for England and Wales.

The report ranks the 1,429 towns, cities and villages on measures covering five categories.

Of all the categories, Stoke ranks highest for its heritage and culture and schools, employment and connectivity, both sitting at 275 (Nub News).

These categories are natural environment, wellbeing, heritage/culture, schools, employment and connectivity and house price quality and value.

Garrington also lists the average family home cost and average sales price change across the last 12 months in each settlement.

Where does Stoke rank in the 2024 Garrington report?

Out of the 1,429 places, Stoke-on-Trent has been ranked 396 overall.

The city fares worst for its house price, quality and value, ranking at 1185 (Nub News).

Of all the categories, Stoke ranks joint highest for its heritage and culture and schools, employment and connectivity, both sitting at 275.

Wellbeing is ranked at 817 and natural environment sits at 437.

According to Garrington, the average family home cost in Stoke-on-Trent is £252,166, with an average sales price fall of 1.5 per cent in the last year.

Where do other places in Staffordshire place in the list?

  • Stone is ranked very low among the country's best places to live, sitting at 1,140 out of 1,429. The average house price according to Harrington is £399,753 but the town is ranked 465 for its house price, quality and value.
  • Stafford sits mid-tier in the list, with an overall rank of 644 out of the 1,429 areas assessed. Natural environment is Stafford's highest ranked statistic, placing 443 on the list.
  • Newcastle-under-Lyme is placed only five places below Stoke-on-Trent, with an average rank of 391. The town's highest ranking is for its schools, employment and connectivity, placing 367 on the list.
  • Uttoxeter on the other hand is ranked very low - 1388 out of 1429. The best statistic is for wellbeing, ranked 807.
  • Cheadle ranked 910 on the list, with a much higher rank for wellbeing of 478. The study also found the average price of a house in Cheadle is £343,686.

The city ranked 427 for its natural environment and 817 for wellbeing (Nub News).

The North Wales seaside town of Rhyl sits at a lowly 1351, with Liverpool ranked 347 and Manchester 135.
