A Stoke-on-Trent organisation has won national recognition from the England Illegal Money Lending Team for its work to support the fight against loan sharks.

Tunstall Together CIC - which works to improve opportunities and wellbeing in the town - is now an official accredited partner of the IMLT, also known as Stop Loan Sharks, the national body that investigates and prosecutes loan sharks and supports borrowers.

The accreditation is in recognition of the work being done by the organisation to help combat illegal lending in the area.

Kyle Smallwood, managing director of Tunstall Together CIC, said: "We are delighted to be recognised as a Stop Loan Sharks Partner.

"Stop Loan Sharks is one of many partners we have in the community as our main goal is to connect people across Tunstall with trusted help, information and services.

"This new partnership is another important step in ensuring residents know where to turn when they need support.

"Through our community hub, local networks and communication channels, we will help raise awareness of the dangers of illegal money lending and signpost people to confidential, specialist advice.

"Partnering with Stop Loan Sharks helps us reach those who may be vulnerable, promote safer alternatives and strengthen the support available locally. We are better working together, for a safer, stronger and more connected Tunstall."

Dave Benbow, head of the IMLT, which is also known as Stop Loan Sharks, said: "The team at Tunstall Together CIC have already shown a real commitment to supporting their local community, and we are delighted to welcome them as an official Stop Loan Sharks partner.

"Organisations like Tunstall Together CIC are invaluable because they are often a trusted source of help and support for local people.

"Their strong community links mean they can reach the areas where illegal lenders may operate, often exploiting friendships, trust and reputation to target vulnerable residents.

"By working together, we can raise awareness of the dangers of loan sharks, connect people with safe and reliable support, and ensure that anyone affected knows where to turn for help."

Stop Loan Sharks explained that many illegal money lenders are well known within their communities and are often introduced to borrowers through friends or family members.

A spokesperson for Stop Loan Sharks said: "They are unregulated and give loans with no paperwork, often adding charges and high interest to loans. They can resort to threats, intimidation and even violence if repayments are not made.

"Because these lenders are not registered with the Financial Conduct Authority, borrowers do not have the protection of consumer law such as cancellation periods and the ability to apply for help if they can't pay.

"This can cause huge amounts of stress and impact other finances – leaving them unable to pay rent or other priority bills.

"Anyone who has been affected by illegal money lending should call the Stop Loan Sharks 24/7 helpline on 0300 555 2222 or send a WhatsApp message to 07700 102773."
