A Stoke-on-Trent market stall has been filled with poppies and flags as part of an annual Remembrance display.

Michelle Mckinney, 45, of Michelle's Deli in the Hanley Potteries Indoor Market, creates a Remembrance display each November.

The stall holder, who has worked in the market for 30 years, has run the delicatessen for almost seven years.

Michelle said: "I do my display every year as a thank you to our veterans and to ensure the act of Remembrance stays front and centre in our daily lives.

"As a local business, I believe it is our duty to remember and give back to those who gave everything and made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom."

Michelle also collects for the Royal British Legion (RBL) by selling poppies from her stall.

Last year she was able to raise £510.

She added: "The response from customers has been incredibly moving, from their generosity donating to the appeal, to listening as some shared their wartime stories with me.

"As a collector for the Royal British Legion, listening to them is a reminder of the importance of Remembrance, and supporting the work of the RBL - which provides life-changing support to the armed forces community."

For Michelle, the display is 'close to her heart' as several members of her family and friends have served in the armed forces.

She said: "Both of my granddads served in the army at a young age. My granddad Hankey served in Malaysia 1950-52, and my granddad Garner served in Egypt 1952-54.

"My uncle John also served in the Royal Navy in the 1970s."

Additionally, nearly all of Michelle's great-grandfathers fought and served in the armed forces.

One fought in World War One alongside his four brothers and although all came home alive, two were severely wounded.

Her other two great-grandfathers served in World War Two, one of which was in the Royal Navy as a minesweeper.

The popular market stall has also recently been recognised as a finalist in the UK Small Business Awards.

The delicatessen has been shortlisted for 'Best Small Business' and is due to find out who will be crowned the winner next year.
