A Stoke-on-Trent man has been jailed after he strangled his ex-partner in Leek.

Ashley Wayne Pointon, 33, from Fenton, was sentenced to two-years-and-three-months in prison at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court yesterday (Thursday 23 April) after he admitted two counts of intentional strangulation.

Detective Constable Kelsey Johnson, of CID north, said: "We worked hard to gather evidence against Pointon, which eventually led to him admitting the offences in court.

"I would like to commend the bravery of the victim in coming forward and telling us what had happened.

"I hope this sentence shows we take such offences incredibly seriously and will work to secure prosecutions against those responsible."

It comes after Pointon strangled the victim, causing her to lose consciousness, in a hotel in Leek in September last year.

Staffordshire Police explained that she escaped to hotel staff, explained what had happened and Pointon was removed from the hotel.

Pointon strangled the victim again at his home address in November last year. She fled to a friend's house and called police.

Pointon was arrested and answered 'no comment' to all questions when he was interviewed in custody.
