A Stoke-on-Trent man has been jailed after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting a young girl.

Adrian Vermaak, of Stoke-on-Trent, appeared at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Wednesday (22 July).

Staffordshire Police said he was handed a three-and-a-half-year jail-term after a jury convicted him of assault of a girl by touching and sexual assault on a female.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "The court heard how Vermaak took advantage of the victim and made excuses to engage in physical play with her, to try and mask the abuse, which took place over a number of years."

Alongside his prison-term, Vermaak was made subject of a restraining order as well as a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO).

He was also ordered to pay a surcharge of £190 once released.

Detective Constable Lili-Rose Gregory, of the Staffordshire Police criminal investigation department, who was the officer in the case, said: "Vermaak denied his offending and tried to blame the victim for the abuse.

"Thankfully, the jury saw past his denials and I'm pleased he has convicted and handed a jail-term for his crimes.

"I hope the outcome brings some comfort to the victim as she continues to rebuild her life."
