Stoke-on-Trent man, 20, jailed after burgling a home and assaulting two neighbours

A Stoke-on-Trent man has been jailed after burgling a home and assaulting two of his neighbours in a separate incident.

Ajay Butler, 20, of Hanley, was sentenced to two years and ten months in prison at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Friday (18 September).

He pleaded guilty to burglary and was found guilty following a trial of wound / inflict grievous bodily harm and assaulting a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm.

PC Bennett, from the Staffordshire Police city proactive team, said: "Butler caused a great deal of harm with his offending across both of these incidents and has rightfully been brought to justice following our investigation.

"We don't underestimate the impact that violent crime can have on victims, and we fully understand how distressing it can be for the privacy of your home to be taken away by burglary and theft.

"We're continuing to act robustly against the offenders responsible for these crimes in Stoke-on-Trent and wider Staffordshire."

In 2023, Butler punched a man who had gone to speak to him after Butler threw eggs at his window in Longton.

A relative of the victim was also assaulted after approaching Butler.

Staffordshire Police said Butler kicked him in the face when he was on the floor, causing a broken cheekbone and number of other facial injuries.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "Butler left the scene when we were called but we later found him and brought him in for questioning.

"Kyle Clarke, from Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, who is now 18, was also arrested for his part in the assault."

In July this year, Butler burgled a home on Meaford Drive, Blurton.

The police force said a group of three individuals, one of which was later identified as Butler wearing a balaclava, took more than £850-worth of goods from inside the house.

Clarke, who was involved in the earlier incident in 2023, was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for one year.
