An officer who has now resigned from Staffordshire Police has been found to have "breached the standards of honesty and integrity" in an investigation into a "domestic incident".

PC 5326 Robert Mason, a response officer in Newcastle-under-Lyme, failed to report an off-duty domestic incident that he was involved in, which left a woman with "serious injuries" in December 2021.

The investigation by the Anti-Corruption Unit at Staffordshire Police found he provided a "false and dishonest account" of how the injuries had been caused to hospital staff and his sergeant.

Mason was suspended and later resigned in June this year. Staffordshire Police says he would have been dismissed without notice if he hadn't already quit.

Acting Deputy Chief Constable Caroline Marsh: "All police officers, staff and volunteers are expected to act with the highest level of honesty and integrity and professional standards.

"Mason demonstrated persistent dishonesty about an assault that led to serious injuries for the victim. He deliberately misled hospital staff and his sergeant about what had happened."

A one-day accelerated misconduct hearing was held on Wednesday 2 July, and found that Mason had breached the standards of honesty and integrity, duties and responsibilities and discreditable conduct.

Mason will be placed on the national College of Policing's Barred List, preventing him from working within policing and other law enforcement bodies.

Acting Deputy Chief Constable Marsh added: "Mason's actions are not a reflection on the large majority of our officers, staff, and volunteers who are professional, dedicated individuals who act with integrity and work hard to keep their communities safe."
