Residents at a care home in North Staffordshire are set to benefit from a digital skills initiative led by school students.

It's hoped the scheme at Borough Care's Hen Cloud House in Leek will give residents a basic understanding of their digital devices and allow them to stay connected with friends and family.

A student from Westwood College will join the Silver Surfers event on 11 June to support residents with navigating search engines, online shopping, streaming and using video calling.

The aim is to help residents stay connected to family and friends across the world as well as their local church services - many of which are also now streamed online.

The session is open for anyone in the local area to attend and Hen Cloud House says there will also be complimentary refreshments on the day.

Sharon Parkes, of Borough Care, said: "As we are becoming increasingly reliant upon our devices, it is important for our seniors to have a basic understanding of how to use them effectively to support them in their daily lives and keep them connected with the outside world.

"We are therefore welcoming Yasmin, a pupil from Westwood High on June 11th to offer guidance on how to use to devices.

"This could be shopping online, safety online, search engine searches, streaming anything from their favourite programme to local church services with many churches now streaming the services online.

"As we have seen a huge increase in families having loved ones all over the world, Yasmin will support with how to use FaceTime and video calling.

"We are inviting the local community to come and join us the session is entirely complimentary and we will provide refreshments."

The home is made up of small households, each with communal areas, sitting and dining rooms. The familiarity of these households supports those living with dementia, whilst enabling them to enjoy the facilities in the home.

There are lots of things to keep residents active and entertained around Hen Cloud House such as a hairdresser, beauty salon and cinema as well as live entertainment, games and activities.
