Road in Newcastle nicknamed 'Bradwell Lake' as it floods for over two weeks
One busy street in Newcastle-under-Lyme has gained the unfortunate name of Bradwell Lake, as the road has been flooded for over two weeks.
Now residents of Bradwell Lane are demanding action and answers as they are fed up with wading through water and sewage. It is not only residents but the local pub, The Britannia, says they are also seeing the effects of the flood, as customers are put off from going.
Sharon Degg, a resident of Bradwell Lane says that over the past 40 years there have been incidents of flooding but nothing on this scale. She says that the council and local councillors are not doing enough to solve the problem.
Sharon said: "It is getting to the point where we physically can't cope anymore. I have seen children playing in the water, which is full of sewage. Cars are actually driving on the pavement to avoid the water. It has been like that since Boxing day.
"We are worried that we are going to wake up and there is going to be a sink hole because of the weight of the water. Every time it rains you wonder if it is going to flood again because it doesn't need a lot of rain and it is flooded again.
"We have been trying to get this sorted for five years and we get passed from pillar to post with no one wanting to take responsibility."
Residents have said that County County Graham Hutton (Con) has previously told them that the issue has been fixed, however recently has said they have found what the problem is and he has ordered more cameras to explore the drains.
Ms Degg continues: "That neighbours cars have been getting water in the electrics causing damage and I know two people who have slipped and one needed to go to the hospital"
Jess Hains from The Britannia pub said: "Then the flooding is really bad it has come on to the car park. I get about two to three calls a day asking if the pub is flooded because if it is they will go elsewhere – we have lost customers because of it"
Drivers have been caught driving on the footpath to avoid the heavy water on the road. John Stocks said that a car nearly ran him over because a car was driving on the pavement.
He said: "I had to jump out of the way because it would have hit me, about five cars followed after that. Something needs to be done because it's dangerous."
It is understood that residents have been told that progress on the road will be made in two weeks, however, if nothing is done residents will start protesting
Andrew Fox-Hewitt (Lab), the local councillor for Bradwell said: "I am appalled by the lack of resolution to this from the County Council, I know I have reported it six times and as a result had the drains cleaned out twice as a result.
"I spoke to the contractors and they said it can't be the drains because we have cleaned them out, it must be a collapsed drainage channel.
"So I don't know why the County Council keep saying that it has been fixed or remedied, I don't know why the County Councillor Graham Hutton is telling residents that he got it sorted because if the drainage channel has collapsed under the road, the only way this is going to be repaired is by digging up the road and that hasn't happened."
Staffordshire County Council's cabinet member for highways and transport David Williams said: "We are aware of flooding issues on Bradwell Lane and work is now planned to replace a gulley and some pipework which the team believes may have collapsed. This will be carried out as soon as possible. Recently temporary signals were put up to control traffic safely through the lane. We'd ask people to take extra care if using the lane after periods of heavy rain and would like to thank people for their understanding until the repair work can be carried out."
