A number of local residents have objected to plans to transform a vacant boathouse in a Stoke-on-Trent park into a new café.

Back in August, Mr Gaunt applied for permission to transform the vacant boathouse in Tunstall Park into a café, serving hot and cold drinks and snacks.

A heritage statement, submitted alongside the planning application, states: "The boathouse will not be used for its original purpose again and its conversion into a café selling hot and cold drinks and snacks continues the building's historic function as a park amenity serving a public benefit.

"The presence of a café in the former boathouse may also serve to increase footfall into the park and enhance the visitor experience."

A number of comments have been submitted on the proposals, some supporting the plans but most raising concerns about traffic, wildlife and anti-social behaviour.

The new cafe would serve a range of hot and cold drinks and snacks (Nub News).

The Chair of nearby Floral Hall wrote: "I must highlight the significant impact this development could have on our operations and financial stability. Floral Hall has long been a vital part of our community, offering services and support that many rely on. However, the potential introduction of a café in such close proximity presents a direct threat to our income, which could jeopardise our ability to continue delivering on our commitment to the community."

One local resident - who has lived in the area for 64 years - said: "There is already one café in the park which perfectly services the culinary needs of the people who use the park.

She also raised concerns about "the threat to wildlife around the area of the lake - the chance of discarded litter and food items that could also attract more vermin" and "increased demand for parking in the area".

However, others have written to the council in support of the plans. For example, one neighbour wrote: "As a lifelong visitor to the park, I truly believe this café will create a welcoming space for everyone - from families to individuals who enjoy the outdoors. It will encourage more positive use of the park and foster a stronger sense of community and safety."

A decision has not yet been made regarding these plans - have your say via the full planning application here.
