A popular supermarket has partnered with the NHS to improve access to free breast cancer screening for eligible patients in Stoke-on-Trent.

Members of the public are invited to take a look around the new unit at Aldi, Trent Vale, on 4 October ahead of the first patients on 7 October.

Inside the unit, a female NHS specialist will use a mammogram to check visitors for signs of breast cancer, aiming to service more than 11,500 women over the next two years.

Mary Dunn, Regional Managing Director at Aldi UK, said: "We're pleased to announce that our store in Stoke-on-Trent will be hosting an on-site breast cancer screening unit in partnership with the NHS.

The unit aims to service more than 11,500 women over the next two years (Aldi).

"Anyone from the local community or beyond is welcome to make their way down to our Godwin Way Store in Stoke-on-Trent on Friday to view the unit for themselves and find out more about the screening process."

Michelle Ellitts, Superintendent Radiographer and Programme Manager at UHNM, said: "One in seven women will get breast cancer in their lifetime, and early detection is vital. Those diagnosed early through breast cancer screening have a more than 95 per-cent chance of surviving, so it's extremely important that we can take our breast cancer screening unit out into our local communities, making it as easy and convenient as possible for those invited to attend their appointments.

"We are delighted and grateful that we have been able to continue to offer this service to our patients thanks to Aldi and encourage everybody to attend this first-of-its-kind event on Friday to view the unit for themselves and find out more about the screening process."

All visits are appointment only and will be allocated to existing patients via their GP.
