Police have said granting a new licence for a city centre bar will undermine all of the licensing objectives and are calling on Stoke-on-Trent City Council to refuse the application.

Slice Lounge on Piccadilly Street have recently applied to extend their opening hours and have the ability to play live music.

The bar which opened in May does not sell any beer, lager or IPA. Instead it has a wide range of high-end wines, champagnes, cocktails and spirits and there are even peppered snails on the menu, along with chicken gizzard skewers and jollof rice.

The African bar and food outlet has been criticised by Staffordshire Police. In September the venue was visited by Police and Licensing officers who carried out a compliance inspection of the premises, where it was noted that four conditions were not being followed.

Firstly, no challenge 25 notices were displayed; a copy of the dispersal police was not made available on request; a weekly CCTV could not be produced and there was no signage reminding customers to be respectful of others when entering or leaving the property. This has led Staffordshire Police to request that the application be refused.

In their objection Staffordshire Police say: "The minimum expectation of the management of a licensed premises is compliance with their own Premises Licence and respective legislation. Considering that this premises has been open for a short period of time, with a recently negotiated and issued Premises Licence, it undermines any confidence that could be afforded to the licence holder that they will promote the licensing objectives should their application be granted"

The application notes that the bar wished to supply alcohol Monday to Thursday 2pm until 1am with the closing time increased on Friday to Sunday until 2.30pm. Currently it is open Sunday to Friday from 2pm until midnight, and on Saturdays from 2pm until 3am.

The applicant and Staffordshire Police will meet licensing officials today (Monday 6 November). This is where the Licensing Sub-Committee at Stoke-on-Trent City Council will determine the application.
