Police close Stoke-on-Trent property following reports of residents 'having fits in the streets'
Police have kicked out a nightmare neighbour following multiple reports of anti-social behaviour and violence. Residents living on Homer Street in Hanley say they are relieved after years of disruption.
Staffordshire Police pursued legal action at the end of August to secure the closure order on the property. This prevents anyone from accessing the property for three months, forcing people to find alternative accommodation.
Residents have reported that people were coming and going from the property at all hours of the day and night and in some cases were thrown out of the house due to the effects of drug use and left to have a fit in the street.
The property now has a notice from Staffordshire Police with a warning saying the property has been secured and will look to prosecute anyone trying to enter to remove items from the property.
One resident who has lived on the street for 31 years claimed this has been the worst it has been. He said: "I think it is because the landlords and landladies aren't vetting people that are living in their properties. I've lived here for 31 years and that's the worst it's ever been.
"According to the builders that will be working on it all the piping, including the gas meter, have all been taken out. They didn't attend the court hearing so midday Friday the police came to get them out."
Another added: "They were smackheads. They had people showing up day or night. I don't know where they've gone and I don't care.
"They never touched any cars or anything like that or damaged anything that way but when they were high they'd be having fits in the street and three o'clock in the morning. We've got a good street here, everybody's ok now."
Staffordshire Police secured the closure order following a hearing at North Staffordshire Justice Centre. Police have warned they will continue to take action and encourage people to report incidents.
Neighbourhood officer, PC Natasha Egar, from Stoke North LPT, said: "Officers have worked hard in order to reduce the anti-social behaviour associated with this property before seeking a closure order.
"This action sends out a clear message that anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated. It also provides some much needed respite to the local community. Everyone should feel safe in their surroundings and we are committed to tackling any type of anti-social behaviour with our partners."
