A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "Our inquiries are continuing and though we are no longer treating the incident as a suspected non-stop collision, we are keen to understand the movements of a dark-coloured vehicle which we believe was travelling northbound on the A500 towards the motorway at the time of the collision.

"We would like to speak to anyone who was travelling along the A500 Wolstanton to Junction 16 of the M6, in either direction, between 9.45pm and 10pm on 4 October.

"Witnesses are urged to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit with any information or footage they may have.

"Anyone with information should contact us on 101 quoting incident number 761 of 4 October or email the collision investigation unit directly at [email protected]."
