Plans have come forward to transform derelict buildings in Longton town centre.

The Market Street retail space has been vacant for more than five years and was previously a hardware and retail store with residential accommodation above.

A planning application has been submitted to Stoke-on-Trent City Council, seeking permission to convert the site into mixed commercial use, with eight self-contained apartments in the upper floors.

A design and access statement said: "Both buildings at 5-7 Market Street are currently vacant and offer no current active trading in the commercial units and no upper residential use.

"The proposal seeks to convert the existing, now-vacant commercial and residential property into a high-quality mixed-use development, comprising refurbished ground-floor commercial space and eight self-contained apartments.

"The scheme includes essential structural refurbishments, a new roof with rear dormers, and a restored shopfront in keeping with the building's original heritage.

"The proposed design aims to create a cohesive, multi-use building with a carefully balanced and considered appearance, while minimising impact on its historic and conservation features.

"The building's form and massing will undergo only subtle changes to the main roof and the roof of the rear section as part of their refurbishment.

"The rear projections will include both two-storey and single-storey elements, following the existing footprint. These will have their roofs replaced to achieve improved thermal efficiency and provide habitable space.

"The commercial units are intended to accommodate small-scale office use, suitable for small or start-up businesses.

"Alongside the new shop front renovations, this proposal introduces a new use for the ground floor to meet modern working standards.

"This proposal addresses the urgent need for high-quality residential units in the area, reactivates a derelict site, and contributes to the revitalisation of Longton's urban core.

"The development not only safeguards the architectural integrity of the area but also provides a sustainable and vibrant new chapter for a prominent local building."
