Plans have been put forward to extend a North Staffordshire business centre.

More than £1.1m from Newcastle Borough Council's Town Deal windfall from the Government will be used to fund the expansion of the Knutton site.

And Staffordshire County Council is set to invest up to £440,000 in creating new workspace at its Newcastle Enterprise Centre. The authority has now submitted a planning application for the proposed west wing workshops to Newcastle Borough Council.

A supporting statement said: "Following the recent successful expansion of the Silverdale Enterprise Centre where approximately 90% of space has been let, a further opportunity has been identified for Newcastle Enterprise Centre. The proposed development is for a new workshop block that includes six individual units ranging from 600 sq ft – 1500 sq ft.

More than £1.1million will be spent on expanding the Knutton centre (Kerry Ashdown).

"These units are to be rented out to individual tenants under SCC management. The units will comprise of a variety of skills and businesses that aim to encourage local, start up companies to operate out of Knutton as part of the wider masterplan for the town.

"An agreement has been made between NBC and SCC to acquire further land to the north-west of the existing site perimeter. This allows further expansion in the form of additional workshop units along the new perimeter line.

"The main construction works will occupy the new section of land acquired to the north-west of the existing site. The former sports centre land will allow the erection of a new workshop block.

"The existing access road along High Street will remain as is. However, a new landscaping scheme will occupy the northern perimeter adjacent to the main entrance."
