Plans for a brand-new fast-food restaurant in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, were approved by councillors this week.

McDonalds submitted plans back in May to take over the former Middletons store on Jaspar Square Retail Park.

A planning statement says: "The proposed external works comprise two small-scale extensions that have been designed to complement the existing building, along with the installation of plant and equipment, replacement doors and windows and minor alterations to the layout of the car park.

"Overall, the proposals will bring this vacant building back into active use and provide a new restaurant in a highly accessible location that fulfils a demand for McDonald's services in this area.

Middletons ceased trading in Tunstall in January 2023 (Nub News).

"It will also result in economic benefits that will directly and indirectly support the local economy, including new employment opportunities and the generation of business rates."

There is currently space for 20 vehicles at the site, including two disability spaces, but McDonalds is proposing reducing this number to 18.

The planning statement explains, "The car parking arrangement will remain largely unchanged apart from the relocation of 1 no. accessible parking space to accommodate the extension to the eastern side of the building entrance. This will result in the loss of 2 no. standard parking spaces."

Plans for a new McDonalds branch were approved by councillors this week (Image via planning application).

The full application also reveals that the new store will create 80 jobs (40 full-time and 40 part-time).

These plans were approved by Stoke-on-Trent City Council this week and an Officer's Report says: "The site was formerly a retail use and the submission documents this is to be used as a McDonald's restaurant (Class E). The application indicates that as both uses fall within Class E, this change of use can be done under permitted change, without the need for a planning application."
