Plans for a brand-new care home for children on a Meir street have been granted "unconditionally" by Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

New Will Care Ltd applied for permission for a property on Shinwell Grove, Meir, to be used as a care home for one child between the age of seven and 17.

The property is currently vacant and the applicant wants to use it as a care home due to an "urgent need for children and young adults to be taken out of larger scaled institutional environment into what is equivalent to Care in the Community".

There will be carers present at the residence 24 hours a day, working on a shift pattern with two people staying at the property overnight.

New Will Care Ltd has specified that the home will not be taking in children with severe learning difficulties or medical needs.

The property, on Shinwell Grove, is currently a vacant two-bedroom semi-detached house (Nub News).

The home would be refurbished and have two bedrooms (one for the child and one for carers), a lounge, dining area, kitchen and bathroom.

These plans were given the green light by the council yesterday (31 January).

An Officer's Report states: "The site is an existing two bedroomed semi-detached single storey property sited within an existing residential area and the end property along this short cul-de-sac.

"The property is set back from the highway with off street parking and an enclosed rear garden. There is a large area of public open space to both the side and rear of the application site.

"With regard to the current application, it is considered that the proposed use would not constitute a material change of use requiring planning permission, and that on this occasion, a Certificate of Proposed Lawful Use can be granted."
