More than 20 affordable homes could be built on the site of a former community centre if plans are given the green light by Newcastle Borough Council.

An application has been submitted to build houses and apartments on the land previously occupied by Knutton Community Centre at the junction of High Street and Lower Milehouse Lane.

The community centre has been demolished and the site has been identified as suitable for housing development, a design and access statement submitted as part of the application said. It added: "The aim of the development is to provide new, high quality, affordable housing which meets the needs of the local area.

The houses would be built on land at the junction of High Street and Lower Milehouse Lane (Google).

"The aspiration of Durata Developments is to create new homes to meet identified needs and enrich the local community. The initial brief was for a development comprising of a variety of family housing, ranging from two to three bedrooms and one bedroom walk-up apartments.

"Pozzoni Architecture and the wider consultant team have engaged with the client and Newcastle Borough Council over a period of months in order to refine the design proposals. Consideration has also been given to the neighbouring housing development on High Street, which is currently in planning, and how the schemes can knit together cohesively."
