Plans for a new children's care home in Stoke-on-Trent have been given the greenlight by councillors despite opposition from local residents.
This comes as previously councillors demanded a site visit in order to assess parking issues.
Planning officers recommended that the council give the green light to the proposals ahead of a meeting in January, however following a number of issues raised, councillors felt like they needed a site visit to fully understand the issues at the Baddeley Green property.
The controversial care home set to be located on Minton Grove received objections from Jonathan Gullis MP, ward councillors Duncan Walker and Dave Evans as well as 80 local residents. The committee heard that the care home will cater for two children and the home would not take children who had a drug and alcohol dependance or a history with antisocial behaviour.
Planning agent Laura Richardson told the planning committee: "Following on from your site visit this morning, the applicant is hopeful that consideration is given not only to the on-site parking available but also to the on-street parking available locally on Minton Grove, Leek New Road, Royal Way, Doulton Grange and other nearby streets. Outside of the occasional visitor this is only generally required for a short period of time on handover days and this will take place at 10am to avoid peak traffic hours."
Councillor Ross Irving (Con) told fellow committee members: "From a planning point of view it would appear that everything is reasonably okay. They've got parking in the curtilage of the property that will be adequate, so I don't really see that there's a serious problem."
Previously the planning committee heard from residents who were concerned over car parking on the site. Especially on staff handover days there could be as many as five cars at the property.
However committee members were also satisfied with the issues raised over parking. Councillor Laura Carter (Lab) who supported the call for a site visit agreed with Cllr Irving, adding: "I was quite vocal in the last meeting about the issues such as parking but I think after seeing the site today there was ample parking on the estate for people to park."
