A scheme to build three blocks of supported housing in Stoke-on-Trent could be changed if a planning application is approved.

Brighter Futures, a registered social housing landlord, was granted permission from Stoke-on-Trent City Council to build 24 assisted living apartments on the former St Chad's Church site on Scotia Road, Tunstall in August 2021.

The developer has now submitted another application to Stoke-on-Trent City Council to reduce the number of dwellings to 18.

The new plans would see a block of eight flats, another block of seven flats and an office, and a block of three bungalows built on the site.

The amended proposal has received a letter of support from a Commissioning and Contracts Manager at Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

The letter said: "The council supports the development locally in order to meet the needs of adults with more complex needs by providing robust accommodation where there is demand in the area with an expectation that this demand will continue."

The applicant, Brighter Futures, is a registered social housing landlord who work to provide supported housing in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire.

The original planning application explained that the site is previously developed land in an established residential area which is close to Tunstall town centre with pedestrian links, cycleways and bus services.

The application said: "The properties which are the subject of this application will be offered as affordable accommodation to people who can live independently but may require additional floating support to live independent and fulfilled lives."

In a report recommending the plans to be approved, planning officers said: "Overall, the proposed assisted living accommodation is considered to be sustainable development and would bring positive benefits to the area.

"The proposed accommodation would also provide high quality homes for adults who require extra help to live independent and fulfilled lives."

The full application can be viewed here

An additional application has been submitted to change the name of the application.
