A planning proposal has been put forward for the refurbishment and conversion of a former Stoke-on-Trent library into flats.

BH Brahams Ltd has proposed the refurbishment and change of use of the former Fenton Library to create nine residential flats.

Fenton Library on Baker Street closed in 2011 as part of council cuts and the application states the building has been broken into and vandalised internally.

The building is a Carnegie Library, which originally opened in 1906, and is located within the Albert Square Conservation Area.

The application says: "The former library is to be refurbished and converted into nine residential flats. The design has been developed to minimise changes to the existing building.

"The design approach respects the historical and architectural significance of the building while ensuring compliance with current building regulations.

"The proposed refurbishment and conversion of the former library into nine flats is a sensitive and sustainable approach to repurposing a historic building.

"The design balances heritage conservation with modern living standards, ensuring that the building remains a valuable asset within the Albert Square Conservation Area.

"The development aligns with local planning policies and promotes sustainable urban living by leveraging the site's excellent connectivity and access to amenities."

The development is proposed to include five one-bedroom flats and four two-bedroom flats.

Details listed in the proposal include bricking up the existing rear pedestrian door, installing conservation roof lights, adding insulation, replacing all windows with uPVC units, carrying out necessary repairs to walls and roofs and installing a dedicated cycle store for 11 bikes.

A separate proposal put forward by Stoke-on-Trent City Council could also see a ground floor area at Fenton Manor Leisure Centre converted into library space.

The application for the former library in Fenton is subject to approval by Stoke-on-Trent City Council.
