Part of the old Signal Radio studios in Stoke-on-Trent are being converted into a discount store.

The landmark building, on Stoke Road in Shelton, was first put on the market in 2023 for £600,000 and plans to turn the first floor of the building into flats were approved last year.

Now signs have gone up for 'Bargain World' where the Signal 1 and 2 branding once hung and there is work underway on the ground floor of the building.

Last year the commercial radio station dropped the Signal name after 40 years when it became Hits Radio under owner Bauer Media Audio UK.

Hits Radio Staffordshire and Cheshire now broadcasts from Birmingham and Bauer axed the last remaining remnant of Signal Radio in June when breakfast with Elliot and Matilda was replaced with a national show featuring Fleur East, Will Best and James Barr.

The plans for the flats on first floor, approved in 2024, also confirmed the ground floor would remain as a commercial space with one bin store and the ground floor entrance at the same point in the corner of the building.

There are also Bargain World stores in Tunstall, Smallthorne, Newcastle and Longton with an Asda Express also set to open nearby on the corner of Stoke Road and Station Road at the former site of CMC Motorcycles.
